Government of Jamaica

Trade

The Trade Unit leverages trade policies to facilitate export-led growth

The Trade Unit ensures coordination across the Ministry and its trade-related agencies in the use of trade policy as a tool for economic development, in keeping with the Government’s growth strategy. This requires the Unit to provide technical advice and policy recommendations on trade issues and negotiations and their implications for the Ministry’s portfolio.

The Unit’s primary functions are to:

  •  Provide technical support and advice in the area of trade policy, including but not limited to: market access, safeguards, dumping, rules of origin, tariffs, competition, technical barriers to trade, standards and accreditation;
  • Conduct research as required to determine the trade policy strategies that maximise economic benefit to Jamaica;
  • Coordinate consultations within the Ministry and its agencies to ensure that the Ministry’s positions are harmonised;
  • Ensure that trade policies are clearly articulated and implemented in the formulation of plans, policies and programmes;
  • Provide technical and strategic advice to the Ministry on emerging trade issues arising within national, regional and international fora;
  • Prepare information and data to inform specific trade negotiations;
  • Track, evaluate and report on major developments in the international trade and economic environment;
  • Act as a focal point for the Ministry’s trade-related activities with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade;
  • Design and lead on special trade initiatives, programmes and projects as required

The Ministry

Welcome to the official website of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce.

As the "business" Ministry, we are the key driver and thought leader for facilitating investments in the economy and preparing local businesses and entreprenuers to take advantage of Jamaica's entry into the global supply chain.

We have, therefore, placed much energy and enthusiam into the development of this website to provide timely information on the Ministry, our agencies and programmes.
