Scrap Metal Export Trade to Reopen July 15
Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Karl Samuda has announced that the scrap metal export trade is to be reopened on July 15, 2008.
The Minister advised, however, that the re-opening of the industry, hinges on a number of provisions and criteria which are to be met by the traders. This will include the proper cleaning up of Riverton City, where all scrap materials on the roadways there must be cleared.
According to Minister Samuda, his main objective is to see the trade up and running again and for the country to continue earning some valuable foreign exchange.
“All I want to see is an industry operating where people do not steal, an industry where legitimate traders can continue to do their business, that is the bottom line”, the Minister stated.
During a meeting with stakeholders in the scrap metal trade this morning (July 4) at the Ministry’s head office in New Kingston, the Minister noted that there are currently sixty-three (63) scrap metal sites, forty-nine (49) have been visited but only nineteen of the forty-nine have been deemed suitable.
“While we did not intend to approve more than three sites, we have decided to increase the number to ensure that the needs of Riverton are adequately addressed. Those that have not been recommended will be given time to regularize their operations”, he noted.
He said that based on the re-inspection done by the Customs Department, it is proposed that the trade be reopened with export from these facilities. The Industry Minister reminded players in the industry that the Trade Act will also be amended to increase penalties substantially.

“We have to introduce stiffer fines so that it will be a deterrent for those persons who continue to steal and who try to beat the system,” he added.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Commissioner of Customs, Danville Walker and executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Joan Gordon Webley.
