Shaw targeting Import/Export Regulations for Cannabis in September

Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, is aiming to have the import/export regulations for cannabis promulgated in September. The Minister made the announcement at the official opening of the SENSI Cannabis House, at the Pulse Centre in New Kingston last Wednesday (August 14).
Once promulgated, Jamaica will be one of 10 countries in the world with an export regime. “I have set a target for the regulations to be promulgated in September and in place because I want us to start exporting extracted oils and buds from Jamaica into external markets,” he said.
Mr. Shaw added that such local by-products are in high demand by countries such as Canada, Australia and Germany and must be supplied. Currently, the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) is in possession of the first draft of the regulations for final review and discussions.
“Upon enactment, it (the regulations) will give the CLA jurisdiction on the statutory authority to handle requests for the import and export of inflorescent flower and extract or resins otherwise known as oils. The CLA will have the authority to grant export permits,” the Minister said.
He congratulated the CLA for improving the landscape for cannabis companies and the country’s attractiveness to investors. Mr. Shaw also lauded the principals behind SENSI Cannabis House, which is a subsidiary of Marigold Projects Jamaica Limited, for their investment into the industry with the opening of the business.
