Industry Minister, Senator Aubyn Hill, says the government’s introduction of taxes on sugary drinks could inspire businesses to produce healthier beverages.

Among the proposed new taxes is the application of a special consumption tax on non-alcoholic sweetened beverages.

Additional increases have also been proposed for alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.

Senator Hill’s comments follow concerns from President of the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association, JMEA, Kathryn Silvera.

Silvera told our news centre she believed the taxes unfairly targeted the beverage industry.

But, Senator Hill believes the taxes will assist the government’s goal of eliminating non-communicable diseases.
