Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, has lauded input supplier Hardware and Lumber (H&L) Agro for its efforts in supporting farmers and the wider agricultural sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the hand over of $2 million worth of supplies by the company at its Spanish Town Road offices on May 21, Mr. Shaw said the initiative is consistent with the Government’s commitment to restore the livelihood and economic stability of farmers in various communities.
“One of the Government’s key development areas is targeting increase in agricultural productivity and therefore our pledge is to ensure national food security,” he pointed out.
The Minister also encouraged farmers to make greater use of portable drip irrigation systems.
Among the items handed over by H&L Agro were vegetable seeds of carrots, plum tomatoes, fertilizers, fungicides and herbicides.
The contribution is part of an initial $10 million that was given as discounts in inputs to farmers during Farmer’s Month in April and which has been extended.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of H&L Agro, Olive Downer Walsh said the aim of the company’s efforts is to ensure that farmers who are in dire need of help receive the help in order to increase production to be able to feed the nation.
