Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, the Hon J.C. Hutchinson, launched a pilot project, Agriculture Push Start Programme, aimed at giving a start to persons who want to pursue agriculture as a business. He was addressing farmers at the National Irish Potato and Onion Production Seminar in Guy’s Hill, St. Catherine, on October 11.
Commencing with the production of three crops – Irish potato, onion and Scotch bonnet pepper, the programme, Minister Hutchinson said, will target youth and women while embracing all agricultural entrepreneurs who have a passion for and are serious about agriculture.
“This is about providing opportunities to better provide for self and family, social empowerment and community development,” said Hutchinson
Under the programme, several private sector companies and other Government agencies will be partnering with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) to assist farmers with their agricultural endeavours.
The National Land Agency will be assisting the Ministry in providing farmers who do not have land, or want to expand cultivation, with access to unused government lands while the Jamaica 4-H Clubs will identify young farmers who are trained and are ready to operate their own business. Technical services and equipment will be provided by RADA.
Potato and Onion Producers Association, he stated, will provide, up front, Irish potato and onion seeds and buy the harvested potato at a contracted price; Newport-Fersan –fertilizer and free soil tests , H&L Agro – chemicals, and PROPEL will provide some of the inputs and training to farmers.
Minister Hutchinson stated that the programme was conceptualised to grow the agricultural sector by 30% and thanked the companies for coming on board with the programme, noting that it showed the level of commitment and confidence that they have in the farmers.
