Industry Minister Halts Export of Copper
MIIC Author

Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl
Samuda has announced that effective immediately no copper will be
exported from the island.
The move is intended to discourage the theft of copper cables.
The Trade Scrap Metal Regulation 2013 provides for the prohibition in the
export of any material made of copper except with written permission from
the Minister.
Minister Samuda has indicated that no such permission will be granted
going forward.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Customs Agency have
been notified of the decision.
Minister Samuda has also issued an order increasing the fine payable for
persons who are found in breach of the regulations.
The maximum fine payable upon conviction for breaches of the regulations
has been increased to $3m, up from $2m.
The maximum prison term of 2 years remains unchanged.
