JSEZA Big on Training

Training is a “big part” of how the Jamaica Special Economic Zone Authority (JSEZA) operates.
In an interview with JIS News, Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), JSEZA, Kelli-Dawn Hamilton, informed that major focus is placed on providing on-the-job training for staff.
“We have a very robust internship programme here at the Special Economic Zone Authority and when our youngsters come in as interns, there is a clear training path that will see us moving [them] through the organisation,” she added.
She pointed out that in any institution where training is a priority and team members are well equipped, they become more attractive to persons, even outside of the organisation.
Mrs. Hamilton further indicated that the JSEZA has partnered with the HEART/NSTA Trust to ensure that citizens are trained to enter the businesses that are being attracted to operate in the special economic zones (SEZs).
Businesses being wooed include those in the energy, manufacturing, tourism and global digital services sector.
“We also have to be strategic to ensure that the types of businesses that we are attracting and the skillsets required for those businesses reside here, so there is a constant conversation with HEART/NSTA Trust to plan for the workforce and for the skills that we will need in these different areas,” said Mrs. Hamilton.
The JSEZA is an agency of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and is responsible for facilitating the development of and promoting investments in SEZs in Jamaica.
