Use agriculture to grow the economy, says Shaw

Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, the Hon Audley Shaw says the country needs to use agriculture to grow the economy. In doing so, Jamaica could create wealth from the ground up, utilising creative financing with the assistance of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE).
Minister Shaw made these comments while delivering the keynote address at the “Market meets Market on the Sea” event, held February 7, 2019 at the waterfront in downtown Kingston.
“We cannot grow the economy,” Minister Shaw said, “without growing agriculture.”
In this regard, the Minister said, linkages and innovation were necessary as he congratulated the Stock Exchange on conceptualising the market meets market event.
Mr Shaw pointed out that establishment, for example, of the Junior Stock Exchange had provided opportunities to strengthen the linkages between investments through the money markets to the agricultural sector.
Currently, he added, there were unprecedented opportunities for investment and growth in the agricultural sector.
The market meets market on the sea event was organised by the JSE as part of it activities to mark its 50th Anniversary. The event combined the display and sale of fresh traditional market produce and the marketing of information on investment and opportunities in the financial markets.
