Hon J.C. Hutchinson (left), Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, views transplanting of onion using a mechanical planter during the Irish Potato and Onion Study Tour held in Enfield, Westmoreland, on Friday, February 24, 2017. The study tour was organised by Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL) in collaboration with the Ministry with some 150 farmers and students from Hanover, St. James and Westmoreland participating in the training. Guiding the proceedings is Donald Robinson (3rd left), agricultural extension facilitator at PROPEL, who explained to the farmers how to prepare the land for transplanting of the onions. Under the Ministry’s Import Substitution Programme, farmers are encouraged to increase their production of Irish potato and onion in order to achieve self-sufficiency.
