The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC) will host the official reopening of the Business Kiosks and Shops at Border, St. Elizabeth, on Friday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m.
Marking a significant milestone in the restoration and revitalisation of one of the parish’s key commercial centres, the reopening ceremony will feature a keynote address by Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness.
There will also be remarks from the Ministers of Industry, Investment and Commerce, and Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill and Hon. Floyd Green, respectively.
The reopening follows the restoration and upgrading of the Border commercial facilities, which were devastated by Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
They have been enhanced to provide improved infrastructure, safety, sanitation and operating conditions.
The upgraded kiosks and shops are intended to re-establish Border as a key trading and commercial hub in southern St. Elizabeth, supporting both vendors and shoppers, while strengthening the local marketplace.
In addition to physical improvements, the project is expected to contribute to job creation and expanded income-generating opportunities for residents.
By supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the initiative is positioned to boost local economic activity and reinforce community-based commerce within the parish.
Through this investment, the Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to MSME development, rural advancement and inclusive economic growth.
The reopening further aligns with national priorities focused on community resilience and the sustainable revitalisation of traditional trading spaces that play a vital role in Jamaica’s local economies.
Activities for the day will include the official reopening, a guided tour of the restored facilities and engagement with vendors and business operators.
Members of the public are encouraged to support the renewed Border Business Kiosks as the community enters a new phase of economic renewal and commercial activity.
