The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries along with the Ministry of Health and Wellness jointly chairs the National Codex Committee, which is comprised of public and private sector representatives, discussing Food Safety matters for Jamaica’s food industry. The National Codex Committee has joined the global campaign in observing “World Food Safety Day” on Monday, 7 June 2021; however, the events planned will be held during the period, 30 May to 7 June 2021 under the theme “Safe Food Now for a Healthy Jamaica”.
Food Safety is a major concern to human, animal, plant and environmental health. The core objective of the week is to raise awareness and promote Food Safety. Food Safety refers to using scientifically proven actions for crop and animal production, handling, transportation, preparation, processing, labelling and storage of food in ways that prevent food-borne illness.
This, the third staging of World Food Safety Day (WFSD) will be celebrated on 7 June 2021. The aim of the WFSD initiative is to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, which negatively impact food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.
