New changes to Jamaica's intellectual property landscape

RECENTLY, there have been major developments in Jamaica's intellectual property (IP) landscape. These changes include the bringing into effect of the much-anticipated Patents and Design Act, 2020 and the Trade Marks (Amendment) Act, 2021. The Patents and Design Act came into effect on February 11, 2022. Some of the main effects of this Act include that the ancient Patents Act, 1857 and the Designs Act, 1937 were repealed and the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) will now exercise the powers that were previously given to the attorney general under the Patents Act, 1857...

IGL pumps up oxygen supplies

Production of medical grade oxygen at Industrial Gases Limited (IGL) will be increased by 40 per cent with the commissioning of an oxygen PSA plant. IGL, Jamaica’s lone supplier of medical oxygen, currently produces 13 tonnes of the product daily. Community enterprises get $50m support

Approximately 200 micro and small enterprises in eight marginalised communities are set to benefit from grant support totalling $50 million. Update: JBDC creates incubator for essential oil producers

Jamaica Business Development Corporation , JBDC, will in April start taking applications for its essential oil incubator, through which it plans to churn out entrepreneurs to take market share away from importers.
