Kingston, Jamaica: Diane Edwards, President of JAMPRO, the country’s agency that promotes business opportunities in export and investment to the local and international private sector, will deliver the keynote address at a webinar being hosted by the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) on World Standards Day, Thursday 14 October 2021, at 10:00 a.m., via Zoom. The event is being held under the theme, “A Conversation: Inspiring Hope as we Vision and Build a Better Jamaica.”
Edwards’ address will be complemented by a Panel Discussion which will include herself along with Professor Densil Williams, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, UWI ; Mrs. Mariame McIntosh Robinson, Vice President, Private Sector Organization of Jamaica and Dr. Velton Gooden, Executive Director of the BSJ. Together the panellists will explore how Standards can help direct Jamaica’s Vision 2030 and broad development plans. The influence and impact of Standards on areas such as industry and commerce, national development and related areas are expected to arise as the team channels their perspectives into visioning for a better Jamaica.
Individuals and businesses interested in participating may register at the BSJ’s website – www.bsj.org.jm or through the various social media pages of the organization.
This year the theme for World Standards Day is Standards for SDGs – Our Shared Vision for a Better World. SDGs refer to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals which are at the centre of the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by Member States in 2015. They replace the eight Millennium Development Goals which had been intended to reduce extreme poverty by 2015.
World Standards Day is celebrated annually on 14 October as standards bodies all across the world lead their countries in its observance and especially pay tribute to Technical Committee members. The international observance is coordinated by the World Standards Cooperation – a collaboration of the top three international standards organizations - International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
