On Thursday July 21, 2022 Senator the Honourable Aubyn Hill toured the production set of “Get Millie Black,” an HBO produced television series based on the novel of the same name by Man Booker Prize-winning author, Marlon James.
Senator Hill was accompanied by Sancia Bennett Templer, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Diane Edwards, President of JAMPRO, Renee Robinson, Jamaica’s Film Commissioner among others including representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Entertainment Advisory Board.
The delegation met with Simon Maxwell, Executive Producer of Motive Productions, UK, Marlon James, Creator and Executive Producer, Justine Henzell of Cinecom Productions and Tamara Lawrance, lead actress in the title role, ‘Millie Black’.
“Get Millie Black” follows ex-Scotland Yard detective Millie-Jean Black, who returns to Kingston to work on missing persons for the Jamaican police. Black picks up the trail of an investigation that begins in the steaming streets of Downtown, Kingston and works its way up to the hill plantations of the post colonial elite.
She soon finds herself on a quest to save a sister who won’t be saved, to find a boy who can’t be found, to solve a case that will blow her world apart, and prove almost as tough to crack as Millie Black.
Jamaica’s entertainment sector is the third largest contributor to the island’s GDP. It also has a significant multiplier effect on the economy through its seamless linkages with other industries and job creation for Jamaican screen professionals.
