Jamaica Showing Strong Post-Hurricane Recovery Momentum – State Minister Seiveright

Just over five weeks after the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28, Jamaica is demonstrating strong recovery momentum, according to Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Delano Seiveright.
He told JIS News that Jamaica’s recovery is demonstrating “remarkable resilience and disciplined progress”, while acknowledging that thousands of households, particularly in the western parishes, continue to face significant challenges.
The State Minister reported that the restoration of essential national utilities that are critical to the resumption of economic activity and daily life continues to advance steadily.
Approximately 82 per cent of National Water Commission (NWC) customers have now had their service restored, including 61 per cent across western Jamaica, the area most severely impacted by the hurricane.
Coupled with this, electricity supply has been returning at a steady pace, with more than 80 per cent of Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) customers now reconnected.
Telecommunications providers have additionally reported service recovery levels ranging from 80 to 90 per cent across mobile, broadband, and fibre networks – critical enablers of economic activity and social stability.
Against this background, Mr. Seiveright emphasised that “these restoration gains within just five weeks are critical”, noting that “electricity, water, and telecommunications connectivity form the backbone of business recovery, and their rapid return is accelerating confidence across communities and industries”.
He further highlighted that the Ministry continues to support the safe reopening and stabilisation of businesses, with particular focus on the western parishes.
“These efforts are being spearheaded by Portfolio Minister, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, who has been leading the Ministry and agency teams in the rebuilding of the iconic Border eateries at the St Elizabeth/Westmoreland line, a vital hub for micro and small enterprise activity,” the State Minister explained.
Similar interventions are also under way to assist micro, small, and medium‑sized enterprises (MSMEs) in regaining operational capacity and safeguarding jobs.
Mr. Seiveright, however, cautioned that despite the substantial progress made, many families, farmers, and small businesses across western Jamaica continue to face hardship.
He underscored that the overall trajectory remains encouraging, with utilities returning, commercial corridors reopening, and both local and international investors signalling renewed confidence in Jamaica’s recovery.
“We are restoring livelihoods, rebuilding critical infrastructure, and reinforcing the economic foundation for long-term growth. Jamaica is moving forward with purpose, and our recovery momentum is strengthening each day,” Mr. Seiveright affirmed.
