Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, the Hon Karl Samuda, has issued a warning to persons to desist from the illicit burning of cane, noting that it was a criminal offence, which has resulted in the loss of millions of dollars for the sugar industry.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices on December 30, Minister Samuda said, “The last thing we want in this country is for the workers in the sugar industry to continue to burn cane illicitly. Illicit burning of sugar [cane] is destructive to the foundation of our economy; it is unpatriotic and it is very discouraging for those persons who work night and day, tirelessly, to keep the industry going.”
“I am appealing to all well-thinking workers within the industry and those in proximity to the industry to cease this hideous practice of burning cane. The loss experienced is not just for the big man, but the small farmers are the ones that suffer most,” said Minister Samuda.
Noting that the illicit burning of sugar cane is a criminal offence, the agriculture minister called on the security forces to leave no stone unturned to ensure that cane farmers are given adequate protection against this practice.
Reports have been received of the illicit burning of sugar cane in Frome, Westmoreland, as well as other parts of the island.
