Minister Shaw Applauds the Contribution of Stalwarts of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica in Renaming and Dedication Ceremony

The Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, the Hon. Audley Shaw, yesterday applauded the contribution of five former employees of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) for their outstanding contribution to national development in a Virtual Renaming and
Dedication Ceremony in their honour. Sections of the compound of the BSJ have been renamed to honour the five former employees.
Speaking at the virtual ceremony, Minister Shaw noted that the distinguished past employees have made noteworthy contributions to the BSJ and were also instrumental to the advancement of the Bureau’s work and by extension, Jamaica’s impact on the region, in several critical areas.
“Mr. James Kerr for whom the Chemistry Laboratory will be named; Mr. Tweedsmuir Mitchell – the Mass Metrology Laboratory; Mr. John Milne – the Metallurgy Laboratory; Mrs. Marguerite Domville – the Packaging Laboratory and Mr. Ashton Watson – the Standards Development Meeting Room, have indeed left a legacy for Jamaicans to cherish and enrich by building on their work,” Minister Shaw said.
Minister Shaw further extended his appreciation to the families of John Milne and Ashton Watson who were being honoured posthumously.
“The contributions of the honourees mark the essence of national legacy… leaving a scaffold of which future generations can climb to continue to give the wisdom and courage of their minds
in the service of our fellow citizens,” the Minister said noting that their initiatives reverberate in every corner of our productive sectors and transcend Jamaica’s shores.
Tweedsmuir Mitchell was honoured for his work in mass metrology and for getting the metrology laboratory to becoming the first accredited lab in Jamaica as well as for his work in mass and flow metrology which has national importance for economic development and consumer protection. Mr. Kerr’s dedication of almost forty years of his life to developing the BSJ’s capabilities in chemistry testing, among other areas; Mr. Milne’s work toward establishing the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards and preparing project documents that saw the establishment of the Regional Non-Destructive Testing Project for Latin America and the Caribbean; Mrs. Domville’s contribution to corporate planning, budget preparation and credit management systems and Mr. Watson’s leading the charge for standards development, promotion and implementation as well his work in assisting industry and exporters, were just some of the areas for which the former employees were lauded.
The renaming and dedication Ceremony further marked part of the BSJ’s 50th anniversary celebration.
