Youth Urged To Seek Careers in Agriculture

Young Jamaicans are being encouraged to take up careers in agriculture and to assist in finding solutions to challenges in the sector.
Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl Samuda, delivering the keynote address at the Jamaica 4-H Clubs’ 2016 National Achievement Expo at the Denbigh Showground, May Pen, Clarendon, on April 29, said young people should “become problem solvers” and should also focus on areas such as the marketing of produce and agro-products, and go after the many opportunities in the industry.
According to Minister Samuda, more and more young people will have to create and nurture small businesses in order to create employment and income generation.
“The agro-industrial sector offers a wealth of opportunities for youth enterprise, and self-employment,” he stated.
He said that after viewing some of the value-added products exhibited at the expo, he would like to see “some of these ideas developed into lucrative agro-businesses, thus making an invaluable contribution to the Government’s commitment to ensure an agricultural industry that brings growth and prosperity to Jamaica.”
