Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Karl Samuda, has pledged to continue to build on the partnership between Jamaica and Britain.

The renewed commitment was made when the Minister met with a five-member delegation from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, United Kingdom, at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices, on September 21.

Minister Samuda said that bilateral relationship and trading between both countries will be strengthened more with the exit of Britain from the European Union (Brexit), and will give Jamaica greater opportunities for increased trading with Britain.

“With this development, I want to encourage our people to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that are ahead of us. We have to continue the push to close the global gap in trading, which will assist us in becoming more competitive in order to be able to trade more with England. We expect that trade between both countries will increase”, he stated.

He said that Jamaica will ensure that the partnership between both countries is aligned, not just for our development, but for the development of the United Kingdom as well so that the development is mutual.

Other areas discussed during the meeting included energy, tourism, child abuse/labour, and the MSME sector.

The delegation, which arrived in Jamaica on Sunday, includes Mr. Phillip Hollobone, Head of Delegation and MP for Kettering; Miss Sarah Champion, MP, Rotherham and Shadow Secretary of State for Women & Equalities; Mr. Steve Reed, MP, Labour and Cooperative; Lord David Goddard, Secondary Legislation Committee, House of Lords and Ms. Zahra Soolagh, delegation secretary.
