Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Shaw encourages Jamaicans to plant fruit trees yearly

Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, is urging Jamaicans to plant a fruit tree per year to commemorate an anniversary or birthday. “The planting of the fruit trees shows that you care about the environment, you care about food security for the poor,” he said. The Minister was delivering an address at the World Food Day National Ceremony and Exhibition, at the Christiana High School in Manchester last Friday (October 11). AT WORK: The national task force on the Tropical Race 4 disease, which poses a potential threat to the banana and plantain industry, is chaired by the General Manager of The Banana Board, Mrs Janet Conie (top right), and co-chaired by the Chief Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspector, Miss Sanniel Wilson (top left), and includes stakeholder representatives from 21 relevant ministries, departments, agencies and farms. The task force is charged with monitoring the implementation of measures to prevent the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. cubense from entering the shores of Jamaica as well as to identify control measures, should the fungus actually get here.

As Jamaica moves to implement measures to address the potential threat of the Tropical Race 4 (TR4) disease, which affects bananas, plantains and Heliconia, the national task force, assigned by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries held its first official meeting at the Ministry’s Hope Gardens offices.
